Special Honoree: John Everton Wyke

John Everton Wyke John Everton Wyke

Johnny, a native Montserratian  grew up  under the strict guidance of his mother, affectionately known as Nurse Wyke.  Johnny was the second child of his late parents.

His brother died at birth, and to make matters worse his father, John Henry Wyke, died when he was 3 months old.   His mother, Nurse Wyke, was a district nurse.  The nursing profession then, entailed working and living throughout the island.  As a result, Johnny attended almost all of the primary schools in Montserrat.  Today, constantly changing schools would be considered disruptive to a child’s education but these circumstances did not hamper Johnny’s progress, in fact, he went on to attend the prestigious Montserrat Secondary School.

Johnny always had an independent attitude and a desire to one day establish his own business.  This dream was realized when he launched “Johnnies Mecca Fashions” in 1975, a business that helped him to become an astute businessman and propelled him into a leader in his community.  He became part-owner in Food City, Real Estate ventures, and The Stationery Office.  He was also part-owner in the famous La Cave Disco which provided much entertainment for Montserratians as well as visitors and tourists.

Before becoming a community leader and entrepreneur, Johnny worked for several local companies, before working for LIAT as a Ticketing Agent and Traffic Manager. This career afforded him the opportunity not only to develop his business skills, but also the opportunity to assist his people by becoming heavily involved in meaningful community endeavors.  He consistently donates monetarily to education,  several charitable and religious organizations on the island.

In the late 1970’s, Johnny joined the Montserrat Festival Committee, a voluntary organization, as the Road Jam chairperson, followed by Chairman, Festival Committee, and was pivotal to the success of many festivals on the island. Johnny worked tirelessly day and night, sometimes neglecting his own business, to ensure that the Festivals maintained a high standard.

Johnny has also served on numerous Boards, such as, the Public Service Commission; Treasurer,  Montserrat Chamber of Commerce; Montserrat Aviation Services; Director for the Bank of Montserrat; Montserrat Scholarship Committee;  Sir Howard Scholarship Committee; as well as several committees in his church.

Among the various accolades Johnny has received, note-worthy is the MBE given in 2007 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which he  accepted with great pride and humility.

Johnny is happily married to his wife Ruthlyn,  the proud father of five boys, Michael, Jermaine, Jon, Julian and Johvan, stepfather to Angele and Ricky and has six grandchildren who he treasures as added blessings to his life.  Johnny is thankful to God for all that He has blessed him with so that he can be a blessing to others.  John E. Wyke is a wonderful, living example of what it means to be a true Montserratian, an outstanding entrepreneur and most importantly, a well-respected community leader.
